Cabman’s shelters

Cabman’s shelters can be found in London, offering shelter for taxi drivers since 1875.
The idea for the shelters started in 1874 when a group of individuals headed by the Earl of Shaftesbury decided to create a taxi drivers charity entitled the Cabman’s shelter fund. At that time taxi drivers were not permitted to leave their vehicles while parked at a stand, the charity aimed to provide taxi drivers with good and wholesome refreshments at moderate prices.
Between 1875 and 1914 a total of 61 shelters were built at a cost of approximately £200 each! They were not allowed to be any bigger than a horse and cart. Even with these restrictions they managed to fit a kitchen and room for many drivers.
There are now thirteen shelters remaining in London, they are all grade II listed buildings.

We will be posting images of the insides of these fascinating buildings soon. . .
