Westbrook wins a thriller

Richard Westbrook scored a dramatic victory in a thrilling feature race for the Porsche Michelin Carrera Cup GB at Oulton Park today (Sunday 21 September).

Westbrook snatched the lead from Barry Horne on the final lap of the race after a fierce battle, while Mark Cole took the third podium position after fending off a tough challenge from Jonny Kane.

The rolling start was a real mix up with poleman Jason Templeman (TCR) swamped as the pack set off. In the confusion, Westbrook (TCR) and David Pinkney (Barwell Motorsport) were also badly delayed as Horne (Team Parker Racing) grabbed the lead from a fast-starting Gavin Pyper (Porsche Cars GB) and Cole (Datapulse Pegasus/RPM).

While Horne pulled out an early lead, Westbrook started to battle back up the order having dropped as low as eighth off the start. "The start was unbelievable," said Westbrook, after being bottled up behind Templeman.

By lap nine Westbrook was up to third and was right on Cole’s bumper. For four laps the cars ran nose to tail, but on the exit of Old Hall for the 13th time Cole missed a gear as the car bounced off the kerbs and Westbrook was able to move ahead into Cascades.

Now, Westbrook set about reducing Horne’s lead, which had been more than four seconds. However, into the second half of the race Horne found his car’s handling going awry. "I couldn't get the car turned in," explained Horne later. Lap by lap Westbrook hunted the leader down and by lap 17 there was nothing between the two cars.

But Horne was not about to surrender his lead without a fight and held on tenaciously until the final lap. They were side by side over Hill Top with Westbrook on the outside line for Knickerbrook. Horne tried to match him under braking, but ran wide over the grass as Westbrook nipped through to take the lead and win the race. "I just had to concentrate on catching Barry and I did it," said Westbrook. "I can't believe I did it!"

Horne had given his all in a cracking contest. "He just hounded me. I tried to brake at the same point he braked, but the car just wouldn't turn in," said Horne after his 17th podium finish in 20 races.

Cole held third but came under increasing pressure from Kane and Pyper until Kane spun at Cascades on the penultimate lap. Pyper then took an excellent fourth as Kane recovered for fifth and Jeremy Smith (Datapulse Pegasus/RPM) battled through to claim a strong sixth from Phil Hindley (Tech 9 Motorsport).
